People in Scotland could be the most in need of loans this Christmas, as they are set to blow more on gifts, food and decorations over the festive period than those in any other area.
Research carried out by Abbey found that shoppers in Scotland will spend £480 each on average, £75 more than people in Wales and £125 more than consumers in the south-east.
The study revealed that when it comes to seasonal spending, children are the main beneficiaries. The average Briton will fork out £116 on their kids, compared to just £42 for mum and £39 for dad.
"Not surprisingly, children top the bill as parents splash out at Christmas, but interestingly there were also quite significant regional differences," said Steve Shore from Abbey.
"Scotland in particular broke their stereotype and those with Scottish relatives look set to have a very merry festive season indeed."
The report found that the average Briton will spend £104 on their partner this Yuletide, while 'secret lovers' can expect something worth just £39 on average.
A separate study from Abbey warned recently that early Christmas shoppers who have already bought gifts should ensure their seasonal insurance covers them before December.
