For those homeowners looking to increase the value of their property, the addition of a loft conversion is the best improvement that they could carry out.
That is according to Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans, which, citing figures from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics), revealed that a loft conversion can add an estimated £10,000 to the value of a property.
Other improvements which significantly raise a property's price tag include double glazing, re-fitted kitchens and new bathroom suites.
Richard Al-Dabbagh, head of personal loans at Alliance & Leicester, commented: "Home improvements should make properties desirable, not only for homeowners while they are living in the house, but also for when they choose to make the most of the investment of time and money and sell.
"If you want to add value to your home, think like a prospective buyer. They only have a short time in the home and first impressions are everything."
