Homeowners who are considering selling their property in the future should avoid implementing "strong themes" in their garden design.
That is according to Kate Faulkner at Gardening Which?, who maintained that a property would be more attractive to buyers if the garden was not at odds with the style of the house.
She asserted that homeowners could add to the value of their property if they had a simple garden, as potential buyers could be put off if it was difficult to maintain.
She noted that interest in gardening had declined since the "Ground Force era" and that "family friendly" gardens were now in demand.
Ms Faulkner said: "It is important that if you are looking to sell your property, your garden reflects the style of your house. Also, avoid strong themes, such as a Japanese or minimalist theme if you are planning on selling.
"A family friendly, easy to maintain garden can now add 15 per cent to the value of your property."
