Garden 'increases property's value'

Homeowners looking to increase the value of their property should pay attention to the maintenance of their green spaces.

That is the advice of Joe Swift, a gardening expert and a presenter of BBC's Gardener's World, who said that gardens need to be kept "well maintained and looking good" in order to enhance the property's appeal for potential buyers.

She suggested that homeowners could liven up their backyards by adding "a few large plants", although she advised against ponds as they could put buyers off due to maintenance issues.

Ms Swift noted that garden furniture was particularly popular for people looking to improve their green spaces, adding that there are new products coming out "which look great but are also just more comfortable".

She also urged homeowners to enlist a professional to assist them with their garden design, saying: "Have something that looks like it's been well designed rather than plonked in, which is what a lot of amateurs tend to do in the garden."
