Making energy efficient improvements to a property could require the use of a loan, as the cost of becoming more carbon neutral can run to thousands of pounds.
Research carried out by Alliance & Leicester found that making eco-friendly changes can cost up to £9,000.
Despite the initial outlay, however, homeowners who pay to get the work done could save money in the long-term.
The report said that adding cavity wall insulation, for example, could save 15 per cent of heating costs for the average household, while loft insulation could shave £110 off bills.
"Nowadays more and more people are giving environmental considerations and their carbon footprints a higher priority," said Richard Al-Dabbagh from Alliance & Leicester. "This includes trying to make their homes as energy efficient as possible."
According to the study, installing double glazing could set the average homeowner back £1,400 and an energy efficient boiler would cost around £500.
Ofgem announced recently that green energy plans from suppliers will now be rated to help consumers understand the costs and benefits.
