Consumers 'should seek debt relief as soon as possible'

Consumers who are struggling with their finances in the wake of the credit crunch should tackle their problems as soon as possible.

That is according to Cliff D'Arcy, a personal finance writer, who urged those concerned about debt to take affirmative action and not to simply "hope the problem goes away".

He said that if keeping up with monthly credit card payments is proving problematic, people should explain their situation to their credit card company and bank and discuss possible ways of resolving the issue.

Mr D'Arcy advised consumers: "Don't leave the problem to get worse. The earlier you tackle it, the better it will be."

He went on to say that debt counselling charities, such as the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), could offer "very good advice" to those struggling with debt.

Mr D'Arcy commented: "If you are finding that debt is becoming a problem and is making you depressed or miserable or causing arguments between you and your partner, you can get in touch with some free debt counselling charities."
