Brits set to spend millions on Christmas Eve

People in the UK are set to splurge millions of pounds on last-minute purchases as they head to the shops to finish stocking up on Christmas Eve.

According to figures from Sainsbury's Bank, shoppers will spend £23.14 billion on December 24th, around 18 per cent of which will go on credit cards.

This works out as £1.5 million a minute changing hands for last-minute gifts and provisions as 46 per cent of UK adults head to the shops to finish their Christmas shopping.

"It looks like the shops are going to be busy on Christmas Eve as a lot of people intend to do a significant part of their shopping then," said Donald McLeod from Sainsbury's Bank.

"Our research would indicate that the overall spend in the Christmas Eve rush is going to be considerably up on last year’s."

A recent study from PayPal revealed that despite the time, money and effort that goes into Christmas shopping, 79 per cent of people say they receive gifts at Christmas that they do not want.
